Ohio BMV Issues

The Clerk’s Office is required by law to send information about cases in the Kettering Municipal Court to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). We must notify the BMV if you are found guilty of an offense that requires points or a suspension on your license. In addition, if you fail to show proof of insurance (financial responsibility) as required by Section 4509.101 of the Ohio Revised Code, we must notify the BMV.

The BMV will then send you a letter (at the last known address on file with the Court), which will provide you the opportunity to show this proof to their agency. If you do not comply within the time frame specified in the letter, the BMV will take away your driving privileges for a minimum of 90 days and up to two years. The Judges may also impose other restrictions on your license, such as a warrant block, license forfeiture or license suspension, if you fail to make appearances or comply with other judicial orders. A warrant block prevents you from renewing your license and plates; a license forfeiture and a license suspension both cancel your privilege to operate a motor vehicle in Ohio. All three court-imposed actions may be lifted by a Judge when you make the required appearance or provide the required information to the Court. Once restrictions are lifted, you will need to pay reinstatement fees directly to the BMV first before you can reinstate your license at your local Registar. These fees can be mailed to the BMV, however, if you want immediate action on your license, you can make a trip to one of the BMV’s regional offices to pay fees and gain reinstatement of your license.

If your license suspension was imposed by the BMV, you will need to comply with their requirements and pay reinstatement fees to get your driving privileges back.
